Mount Carey Baptist Basic School
St. James Parish, Jamaica | Andrea Reid, Headmaster
Host: Link Vanecia Belser Kimbrow, River City (TN) Chapter
About Mount Carey Baptist Basic School
Mt. Carey Basic Baptist School is located in Mt. Carey. It’s roughly a 30-minute trip by bus to a rural village outside of the city core. The village was ravaged by the tornado that hit several years ago and the elementary school literally fell off the mountain where it sat. This left the students in the area without an elementary school. Unable to rebuild, the students were split by age and sent to a nearby school, but due to overcrowding, the Pre-K to 1st grade students were excluded. Since that time, we have been funding efforts to build additional classrooms on the site and have had success with supporting 5-6 new classrooms being erected on the site, however, they still lack any sort of communal space, functional offices, and they still desperately need facility repairs and mold remediation in the classrooms, a library, playground repairs and safety upgrades, and a garden to grow fresh fruit and vegetables to ease the strain of accessing healthy foods.
