It’s OK Not to be OK: How to Cope with Social Anxiety
Facilitator:  Dr. Danielle Graddick

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders among children ages 3-17. Many middle schoolers struggle with the crippling and isolating effects of social anxiety—particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The life of a socially anxious student can be hard. After all, how can you be expected to perform in school, excel in sports and maintain your friendships at the same time?

In this workshop, we will define social anxiety and discuss the most common symptoms shown in middle school students. We will talk about the importance of self-esteem, how to rediscover your authentic self, and why this will reduce social anxiety in the long run. Finally, we will review specific, evidence-based strategies to manage social anxiety and build lasting confidence.

2:45 PM -3:45 PM

Young CROWNS – Embracing Your True Self and Crushing Stigma!
Facilitators:  Tish Archie-Oliver and Jeanine Lewis Canales

Through this discussion, Mother Tish Archie Oliver and Mother Jeanine Lewis Canales will share various strategies and practices that our young people can employ to speak up for themselves, fostering a sense of self-love, confidence, and empowerment, especially amidst race-based discrimination (and/or microaggressions) that may be present in their schools. We will address the importance of self-advocacy and self-care, and how to speak up for ourselves and for each other.

Additionally, we will delve into the CROWN Clubs that have been created and how students can create their own clubs in their schools.
